Filling in the Seasonal Fashion Gap

With autumn in clear view - yet with summer not quite over yet - shopping for clothes can be a bit confusing at this time of year. If you opt for summer fashion items - much of which already is or will soon go on sale - you're not likely to get too much more wear out of them.

Yet it seems a little too early to be picking up autumn pieces. So what's a fashion-conscious man to do? Relax; there is a way to ease into autumn fashion, pairing specific fashion pieces with a transitional method of wearing them.

To begin, remember that you're going for an "in-between" look and feel with regard to seasons. You'll want your items to be warm enough for cooling temperatures, yet not so warm that you're sweating in them. You also don't want to look overdone in the coming season's fashion trends. Instead, you'll want to gradually ease into them.

Start by opting for cotton cashmere knits, long-sleeve polos, and lightweight cardigans instead of heavier jackets. Colourful jumpers and blazers are also in for the coming season - so it's a great idea to include a few in your transitional wardrobe. And light shirts with slimmed-down collars - as well as tanks - are great for wearing underneath blazers, jumpers, cardigans and polos. All of these items are lightweight enough for the current season, yet can work well together for autumn fashion.

Another point to consider is how you'll wear your transitional items. On their own, some pieces might not be quite warm enough for dropping temperatures. But if you layer items together, you'll get the desired warmth and the convenience of shedding layers if it gets too warm. What's more, you'll benefit from a layered "transitional look", which is always a fashion plus at this time of year.

Finally, some of the hottest designs and colours for the coming season include stripes - both pin stripe and bold - as well as the timeless preppy trend, which one can never seem to go wrong with. With regard to colours, warm and earthy hues - such as browns, reds and oranges - will be in vogue, so pair a few key piece such as men's blazers, cardigans and knits, along with the right colours and styles and wear them in a transitional fashion to fall in line with both the current and coming seasons.
